Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
If you have a Gelco flue liner that’s cracked, rusted, or failing, we can replace it. A typical Gelco flue liner replacement in Pasadena runs between $2,800 and $5,500 installed, depending on the liner length, whether we can reuse your existing cap, and how much of the old liner needs to come out first. We stock Gelco-compatible replacement liner kits and most jobs are done same-day once we have the right size confirmed. Most Pasadena homeowners don’t discover the liner failed until a routine sweep or inspection turns up crumbling metal, water stains at the firebox, or smoke that won’t pull up the flue the way it used to.
Flue relining means replacing the inner liner that channels smoke and combustion gases safely out of your house. When a Gelco liner goes, it goes in a way you can usually see in a camera inspection before it becomes an emergency.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes rigid stainless steel flue liners in a handful of standard diameters: 5-inch, 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch round, with an oval option for older terra cotta flues. Pasadena’s housing stock is full of chimneys from the 1920s through the 1970s in neighborhoods like Bungalow Heaven, Madison Heights, and San Rafael. Those older chimneys often have oddly sized clay tile liners that don’t match a standard round size, which is where the oval Gelco liner or a custom sizing conversation comes in.
To identify what you have, look up inside the flue from the top or check the paperwork from the last inspection. A Gelco liner has its size and alloy stamped near the top section. If you can’t see a stamp, the inside diameter tells you most of what you need to know. The compatibility gotcha that trips people up: a Gelco liner doesn’t care what brand your cap is, but the liner-to-cap connection needs to be the same diameter. If you have a 6-inch Gelco liner and a 7-inch cap, they won’t mate, no matter how many screws you try.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco. We install and sell Gelco-compatible liner kits because they hold up well in southern California’s dry-heat, damp-winter cycle. The one thing we don’t recommend is trying to mix off-brand liner sections with a Gelco system. Different alloys expand at different rates, and Pasadena’s temperature swings between cold winter mornings and hot attic afternoons will eventually show you exactly where those seams are.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Flakes or chunks of metal in the firebox. This is the most common discovery, especially in Pasadena homes where the liner sees occasional use and sits cold most of the year. The metal rusts from the inside out, and the first sign is debris on the smoke shelf or in the firebox. If you see this, the liner is actively shedding material.
- Water staining or rust marks on the wall where the chimney passes through. Gelco liners fail at the seams first, and any gap lets condensation and rain into the chase cavity. Pasadena’s winter morning fog and the occasional heavy downpour matter more than people think.
- Smoke that backs up into the room instead of drawing up the flue. A liner with a collapsed section or a separated seam creates a flue that can’t hold a draft. The flue either draws or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, we find out why.
- A smell like stale smoke or barbecue that never goes away. That’s creosote and combustion deposits building up in a liner that has a crack. The smell seeps into the wall cavity and gets pulled back into the living space.
- The liner has visible holes or separation at the joints when you look down from the roof. This is easiest to spot on a clear Pasadena afternoon. If you can see daylight through the seams, the liner is done. No patch job will hold.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Pasadena, a Gelco flue liner replacement typically runs $2,800 to $5,500 installed. The range breaks down like this: a straightforward single-story chimney with good access and a standard 6-inch liner will sit at the lower end. A two-story home, a steep roofline, an oval liner that needs custom fitting, or a cap that has to be replaced at the same time will push the price toward the upper end.
Every replacement includes the liner material, the connectors, removal of the old liner sections, installation, and a camera scan after the fact so you can see the finished work. We put the price in writing before we start, which means you approve the exact number before any tools come off the truck. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the liner fails within a year or the installation needs adjustment, we return at no charge. Materials we use include Gelco, DuraFlex, and HeatShield, spec’d by the job, not by margin.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do two things: shine a flashlight up from the firebox to look for obvious flaking, and go up on the roof to inspect the top few feet of the liner if you are comfortable on a ladder. That is the extent of it. Replacing a flue liner is not a DIY job for one simple reason: if you get the connection wrong, you are venting carbon monoxide into the wall cavity instead of out the top. That’s a mistake you won’t know you made until it matters.
The other thing that goes sideways is dropping a liner section down a chimney and having it wedge against an old clay tile offset. Getting a stuck liner out usually means more disassembly than the install required in the first place. We carry liner pullers and the tools to handle Pasadena’s older masonry flues. If you are on the fence about whether the liner is really failing, call us and we will do a camera inspection. You’ll be able to see exactly what we see before anyone talks about replacement. FAQs
A stainless steel Gelco liner installed correctly in Pasadena will typically last 15 to 25 years before the seams start to show wear, with the biggest variable being how often the fireplace is used and whether the liner is exposed to rain from a missing or damaged cap. Liner failure here is usually driven by water intrusion and thermal cycling, not by volume of use. If your liner is already 20 years old and showing rust flakes, replacement is the right call now rather than waiting. Call (626) 657-5513 for a camera inspection and an honest read on what you have.
No. Liner sections can’t be patched or spot-welded in a way that would hold up to the heat and movement inside a chimney, and a repair that fails is a carbon monoxide pathway into the house. If the damage is isolated to the top few inches at the cap connection, we might be able to cut and refit that section. But a mid-chimney crack or seam separation means the liner is done. We’ll show you the camera footage before anyone spends a dollar on replacement.
A standard Gelco liner replacement in Pasadena takes between 3 and 6 hours from the moment we pull up to the moment we sweep up. Multi-story homes, oval liners that need cutting, and flues with offsets can stretch the job to a second visit, but most single-family jobs in Pasadena finish the same day. We book the time, show up at the time, and put the written price in your hand before we start.
We carry the most common Gelco liner kits and connectors in our service vehicles so we can start a Pasadena replacement immediately, which covers most 5-inch, 6-inch, and 7-inch round applications. If you have an older oval terra cotta flue or a non-standard size, we bring the exact liner needed on a return visit, usually within a few days. The same call that gives you a free estimate will tell you which situation you’re in. Call (626) 657-5513 to book the inspection.
