Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace Copperfield chimney dampers throughout Pasadena, with most top-seal damper repairs running between $340 and $680 installed, depending on the model and what’s actually failed. We stock Copperfield-compatible damper parts on our trucks, so we can usually diagnose the problem, quote a written price, and complete the repair the same day we’re on site. Most Pasadena homeowners discover the problem on a cold morning: the room smells like last night’s fire, cold air pours down the flue, or the handle spins without catching anything.

This page covers everything we know about Copperfield damper failures: which models we see most in Pasadena homes, what breaks first, what replacement costs, and when a repair makes more sense than a full swap. We’re an independent chimney service company. We’re not affiliated with Copperfield, but we work on their dampers regularly and keep their common parts in stock.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield makes two damper families we see regularly in Pasadena: top-seal dampers (mounted at the flue opening with a cable or lever control running down to the firebox) and throat dampers (the cast-iron or steel plate just above the firebox). The top-seal models account for about 70% of our Copperfield repair calls, because the cable assembly and the spring mechanism live in harsher conditions than most owners expect. Pasadena’s dry summers and damp, cool winters are rough on the seal gasket, which shrinks and cracks over time.

How to identify your Copperfield damper:

  • Look for the stamp. Copperfield top-seal dampers usually carry a metal tag or stamped plate on the damper frame itself. You’ll need a ladder and a flashlight to read it, or we can identify it during an inspection.
  • Measure the flue opening. If the tag is gone, measure the inside dimensions of the flue tile. Copperfield top-seal dampers are sized to the flue, not the fireplace opening, and getting this wrong is the most common fitment mistake we see from DIY replacements in Pasadena homes.
  • Check the cable type. Some Copperfield models use a braided stainless cable, others a rigid rod. The replacement kit differs by series, not just by size.

OEM versus aftermarket: We install both. Copperfield OEM parts guarantee exact fit and carry the manufacturer’s own material warranty. For some older models, the OEM part is discontinued, so we use aftermarket components made to the same spec. We’ll tell you which route applies to your model and show you the part before it goes in. No surprises on the invoice.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Is Failing

Here are the five failure patterns we diagnose most often in Pasadena homes.

  • The handle spins freely or won’t lock closed. The cable has detached from the damper plate or the worm gear in the handle assembly is stripped. This is the most common Copperfield failure: the gear teeth wear down after a few seasons of hard use.
  • Cold air drops into the room even with the damper closed. The silicone-rubber gasket around the damper plate has shrunk or cracked. Pasadena’s temperature swings accelerate this, especially on south-facing chimneys that bake in afternoon sun.
  • You hear wind howling through the firebox. The damper plate isn’t seating evenly. This can be a worn gasket, a bent frame, or debris wedged under the plate. We see this most often in hillside Pasadena neighborhoods like the San Rafael Hills, where wind loads are higher.
  • Smoke rolls back into the room when you start a fire. The damper plate isn’t opening fully because the cable has stretched or the spring tension has failed. Owners sometimes mistake this for a flue blockage, but in about a third of Pasadena call-outs, it’s a damper mechanical problem instead.
  • Visible rust or corrosion on the damper frame. Top-seal dampers sit exposed at the flue opening. Years of rain, marine-layer moisture, and wood-burning residue eat at the frame, especially on homes near the Arroyo Seco where humidity runs higher.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Pasadena, a Copperfield damper repair or replacement typically runs $340 to $680 installed. Here’s what drives that range:

  • Cable and handle assembly repair: $340 to $460. Parts plus about an hour of labor. We stock these on the truck in common Copperfield sizes.
  • Full top-seal damper replacement: $480 to $680. New damper frame, plate, gasket, cable or rod, and handle. Includes removal of the old unit and fitting the new one to your flue dimensions.
  • Throat damper repair or replacement: $320 to $520, depending on whether we’re repairing the hinge and linkage or replacing the plate entirely.

Every quote is a flat price, written down before we start. It includes the part, labor, removal of the old hardware, and a one-year written guarantee under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within that year, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s the whole point of the Garrison Standard: the number you approve is the number you pay.

Cost drivers in Pasadena specifically: roof access difficulty (many older Pasadena homes have steep pitches or tricky chimney placement), flue size (older Craftsman-era chimneys often have non-standard flue dimensions that need a custom-fitted damper), and whether the chimney crown needs minor patching around the damper frame. We’ll tell you at the quote stage if any of these apply to your house. We won’t find a reason to add them after the fact.

DIY or Call Us?

Working on a top-seal damper means getting on the roof and reaching into the flue opening. That’s the part we’d tell you not to do yourself: Pasadena roofs with their tile and shake surfaces are unforgiving, and the flue opening is a bad place to lose your balance. The high-tension spring in some Copperfield models can also release suddenly if you remove the plate without releasing tension properly, and the cable routing through the smoke chamber is easy to get wrong if you haven’t done it before.

What you can safely check: the handle operation from inside the house, whether the cable attaches at the firebox end, and whether visible gasket material is crumbling onto the damper plate. If the cable is slack, the handle spins, or the plate won’t sit flat when closed, that’s the time to call. We’ll diagnose it on site, put the price in writing, and get it done. Call us at (626) 657-5513. The flue either draws or it doesn’t. Let’s find out which.
