Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
Gelco chimney cap installation in Pasadena typically runs $385 – $680 installed, depending on the cap model, flue size, and whether we’re replacing a failed mount or starting fresh. We stock Gelco-compatible caps and mounting hardware on our trucks, so most Pasadena jobs are done in a single visit. You usually find out the cap failed the hard way: rust flakes in the firebox, water staining on the ceiling near the flue, or a cap that’s visibly leaning after a Santa Ana wind event.
We’re an independent chimney service company, not affiliated with Gelco. But we install and service their caps regularly because Pasadena homeowners ask for them by name, and the fit is consistent when matched correctly.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes chimney caps in two broad lines that cover most Pasadena homes: the standard single-flue caps (round, square, and rectangular bases) and the multi-flue or “universal” caps that span both flues on a wider crown. The mounting method differs. Single-flue caps use a pressure-fit or screw-tightened base that slides inside the flue liner. Multi-flue caps mount to the crown itself with masonry anchors.
The compatibility gotcha we see often: a homeowner measures the outside dimension of the flue tile and orders or brings a cap based on that number. Gelco caps are sized by the inside dimension of the flue liner, not the outside. An 8×13 flue tile has roughly a 6.5×11.5 inside opening. Get that wrong and the cap won’t seat, or it seats so loose it rattles in wind. We measure both before we quote.
For OEM versus aftermarket: Gelco caps are solid, mid-weight stainless, and the OEM part is worth the money if you’re replacing like-for-like on a newer cap. But if the cap is ten-plus years old and the mesh has rotted out, a quality aftermarket Gelco-pattern cap from a brand like Copperfield or Olympia often costs less and carries the same material spec. We’ll show you the difference in writing before you decide.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks or flaking metal on the cap itself. Gelco caps are stainless, but the mesh screens take the brunt of coastal moisture and Pasadena’s morning marine layer. Once the mesh rusts through, birds and debris get in.
- Water in the firebox after rain. A cap that’s shifted or lost its seal lets rain run straight down the flue. You’ll see dark staining or actual puddling on the firebox floor.
- The cap is leaning or rotated. High winds in the foothills above the Arroyo Seco catch caps like sails. Over time, the pressure-fit loosens and the cap starts to walk. Eventually it drops.
- Birds or animal noise from the flue. Crows and squirrels are persistent in Pasadena’s mature neighborhoods. If the mesh is compromised, they’ll nest, and an active nest in a flue is a fire hazard, not just a mess.
- Visible gaps between the cap base and the flue tile. That gap lets sparks and embers escape. In wildfire-prone California, an oversized or poorly fitted cap on a wood-burning fireplace is a legitimate spark-arrester failure.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Pasadena single-family homes, a standard Gelco-style single-flue cap installed runs $385 – $520. Multi-flue caps on wider crowns run $520 – $680. The range is driven by flue dimensions, roof pitch, and whether we’re drilling new anchor points or reusing clean, sound existing ones. The written quote you approve before we start includes the cap, all mounting hardware, any minor crown touch-up needed for a clean seal, and our labor.
There is no separate trip charge and no fee added at the door. If the cap fails within one full year under The Garrison Standard, we return and make it right at no charge. The invoice number matches the quote number, every time.
DIY or Call Us?
Honest answer: inspecting the cap from the ground with binoculars is safe and useful. You can spot rust, leaning, and missing mesh. You can also note the flue tile’s condition from a safe distance. What you should not do is climb onto a tile or slate roof in Pasadena to swap a cap yourself. Tile roofs crack under foot traffic, and a fall from a second-story eave is a life-changing injury. We carry the right ladder setup, roof pads, and fall protection on every truck.
If you want to check the cap yourself from ground level, call us afterward and describe what you see. We’ll give you a straight answer on whether it needs service now or can wait. The flue either draws or it doesn’t. Let’s find out which.

FAQs
A properly installed Gelco-style cap in Pasadena typically lasts 8 – 15 years depending on sun exposure, tree cover, and how often the fireplace is used. The mesh screen is what fails first, usually long before the stainless body shows wear. We see the shortest lifespans on homes facing full west sun near the Arroyo Seco, where UV and heat cycling break down the mesh welds faster than most homeowners expect. Call (626) 657-5513 and we’ll tell you in five minutes whether yours is still doing its job.
Sometimes the mesh can be replaced while keeping the cap body, but only if the body is rust-free and the mounting legs are intact. If the base is warped or the mesh is rotted through, repair stops making sense, and we’ll tell you that in plain terms before you spend a dollar. We won’t sell a repair that fails in a year.
Most single-flue Gelco cap installations in Pasadena take 45 to 90 minutes from ladder up to cleanup done. Multi-flue caps that need new crown anchors run closer to two hours. You’ll know the exact timeframe when we hand you the written quote.
We stock Gelco-pattern single-flue and multi-flue caps in the sizes that cover 90% of Pasadena chimneys, along with DuraFlex and HeatShield liners when a cap replacement is part of a larger flue repair. If your flue is an odd size, we order the exact piece and schedule the install within the week. A live person at (626) 657-5513 can confirm stock before you book.
